Together with its project partner, the German-speaking Protestant Community in Addis Ababa, “Bread Against Need” planned, financed, and built a container bakery, which it opened in mid-2024.
The container bakery provides school meals for the 230 local Ethiopian students who receive scholarships at the affiliated German Church School. This holistic support provides enormous assistance to these families in need.
The bakery’s long-term and profitable operation is also ensured by the sale of German baked goods/sourdough breads to the mostly German-speaking members of the congregation during Sunday services. Partnerships with resellers are also planned for the end of 2025.
Last but not least, six young, single, and vulnerable mothers are being trained by students so they can pursue qualified, paid employment while their children are at school. Our thanks go to the initiators of the container bakery, Pastor Matthias Rohlfing and his wife Anne, as well as the current Pastor Jürgen Klein.
